Modules and Widget
The handful of buttons on the main window let you launch a quick malware scan, a full system scan, or a vulnerability scan. You can also check for updates or launch Bitdefender's Safepay secure environment (more about SafePay later). To access other security features and configuration settings, you click the Modules link. The resulting page organizes features into three areas, Protection, Privacy, and Tools. A few features found in last year's edition have fallen by the wayside. The latest Facebook API put enough restrictions on apps that the Safego Facebook privacy tool could no longer do its job. Data Protection, which prevented transmission of user-defined personal data, was hardly ever used. And the tuneup tools have been simplified and moved into Bitdefender's suite products. At installation, Bitdefender places a simple widget on the desktop. The widget reflects security status, displays scan progress, and shows the number of unread notification events. You can click that number to see the notifications, or click the center of the widget to open the program. Don't like the widget? Fine, just turn it off. Scan and Rescue Like most antivirus products, Bitdefender offers a full system scan and a quick scan that focuses on likely malware locations. Advanced users can define any number of custom scan tasks. A full system scan took over an hour, about twice the current average (though not as long as Panda Free Antivirus (2016)Free at Panda Securitytook. However, Bitdefender uses that first scan to optimize for future scans, identifying known good programs that don't require scanning. A second scan finished in less than 10 minutes.
It's true that for the most part you can just sit back and let Bitdefender do its job on Autopilot, but there's one little preparation step that's worthwhile. Click the Modules link, click Rescue Mode, and let Bitdefender reboot your system. You'll get a choice, boot into regular Windows, or boot into Rescue Mode. Choosing the latter opens a non-Windows environment from which you can run Bitdefender to clean up ransomware or other truly pernicious malware.
You want to do this now, not wait until after malware takes over your computer. Once you've invoked Rescue Mode once, it remains an option each time you boot. If ransomware puts a stranglehold on your computer, you simply reboot and root it out.
Stellar Lab Results
I rely on independent testing labs around the world to identify the antivirus products that do the best job of identifying and defending against malware. Bitdefender gets fantastic scores from all the labs that include it. For example, AV-Test Institute rates antivirus products on three criteria, protection, performance, and usability, with six points possible in each category. Bitdefender earned a perfect 18 points in this test.
Fearless Fraud Fighter
Blocking malicious URLs and fending off phishing (fraudulent) URLs would seem to be very similar tasks, but not every antivirus is equally effective in both areas. Bitdefender proved even more effective in my antiphishing test than in the malicious URL blocking test.
Ransomware is a growing problem, and getting hit with a ransomware attack can be seriously damaging. Typically the ransomware quietly encrypts all your important documents in the background and then demands a payment in Bitcoin (or some other untraceable currency) to restore those documents. Even if you pay up, the malefactors behind the attack may not hold up their end of the deal.
You'll want to dig in and enable Bitdefender's Ransomware Protection, which is turned off by default. When you do, you'll see that it protects the Pictures and Documents folders for each user on the system. You can add more folders to the protected list.
Any time a non-approved program attempts to modify a file in one of these folders, Bitdefender denies it access and pops up a warning. If it's a legitimate application that you meant to launch, perhaps an off-brand word processor, you can click Allow to whitelist the program. Any program not whitelisted won't be able to touch those files.
